So on a certain day I came to realize something about myself and about my way of living. Sometimes you think of something so good or find out about yourself, that you know you should not forget about it.
I decided to write it down this time, because I already found out that I forget these things over time.(except I didn't forget that I forget stuff that I found out, that's another thing that I found out about myself, strange...)
My way of living is sometimes very short minded. I make good money, so I can afford to live like this. I have absolutely no problem with it and I do save some for my pension, but I could do much, much better. My holidays are bloody expensive, but I can afford them easily as long as I have work. If I wouldn't have work, I would be in deep trouble because I burn everything faster then a stockbroker on wall street... okay, not that fast, but too fast for a normal John Doe.
A small example.... I had a Christmas dinner gala last Thursday of a student sorority of the faculty psychology.
Which is by the way very interesting by itself, because you can get some good social communication skills just by talking to them. Some really interesting tips and correct way of communicating with people. I must train on this, because it will give you an advantage in daily life.
Anyway, I had to either rent or buy a tuxedo. Where I come from it is perfectly normal to rent this stuff for the evening. Simply because it is a suit that you normally don't wear to anywhere besides gala's. The thing is, I may be not the person who has gala's every year, so from that point of view it would be smarter to just simply rent one for an evening. Was it not that I would have a dance gala the week after.
So I came to think, that women are allowed to have their often beautiful gala dresses and entourages etc. So men should equally have a suit that makes them look sooooo good and makes them feel confident just like a grown up trying to steal candy from a baby.
Thus I justified myself that I could go out and buy a tuxedo. *pats myself on the shoulder on a job well done*.
In that Thursday morning I went out to one of the better suit shops in The Hague and asked for a tuxedo. This guy presented me one of Paul Smith, a beautiful and very slick tuxedo of no less then 750 euro's. Man! that tux looked really good. The fabric was smooth, it felt smooth and it had modern style class written all over it. Unfortunately I didn't dare to burn that much money :-). I didn't dare to try it on either, because I was afraid I would say yes. The sales person directed me to a shop across the street, Suit supply. They are a whole lot cheaper and still have fairly good suits.
I presented myself with my case and I tried on a classical tuxedo with everything on it. Even an original butterfly, not a clip on. The tuxedo was in total (with shirt, manchet buttons(english??) and a butterfly tie) a little over 300 euro. (no shoes, yet)
It felt great to just go in a shop and by the stuff you need at that time. I know I should be more humble and think stuff like this over. But I felt that I needed the tuxedo and went out and just bought one. Came home, dropped the stuff on the bed and went out to rent some shiny shoes. At that time it felt like too much to buy shoes I could really only wear just a few times and my time was limited that morning. I actually want shoes that I can wear with luxurious occasions as well and not only for under a tuxedo and that are good enough to dance with.
Because I know I can burn money fast and I do realize that my way of money making will not last, I will have to start saving for the things that I really really want to do in my life. That way when I don't have to pay my holidays out of my normal bank account, but from my savings.
Another thing that I know about me is that I like too many things. I have trouble prioritizing stuff in daily life and also for the long term issues. Saving for the long term will ensure me with a confident and happiness factor in my life.
I decided to come up with "My 7 wonders of achievements"!!
These 7 wonders are my personal goals for life that I must do before I die.
Off course I am not talking about a one-day-fly, like jumping out of an airplane with parachute.
No, no, I'm talking about the stuff that will burn some character in you for the rest of your life. The stuff you can tell your children and friends and hopefully make them just as ambitious.
I guess I should mention that these 7 achievements are subject to change over time if I find out about way cooler stuff :D. I guess walking on Mars would be totally cool to do, but that's not realistic at all. These 7 should be hard, but not impossible for a regular john doe.
Okay, here we go!
#7; Steering a 60ft (hydro-foil) trimaran in a race.
#6; Residing in a dojo in Japan somewhere lost in the mountains for at least a year and learning 2 martial arts techniques.
#5; Snowboarding a whole week/month of the top of a mountain somewhere in Canada and get it on film!
#4; Climbing an mountain in an expedition and reaching the top and getting back safely.
#3; Running the marathon in New York.
#2; Leading an expedition or participating in a race to sail across the Atlantic ocean.
#1; When I am retired or fed up with the busy life, I want to sail the Caribbean on my boat and take tourists and bring them where ever the wind blows us.
Now you would think, that running a marathon is a one-day-fly. The thing is, that the road to getting there requires me to train for a marathon. I am not even close to running 42 KM in a respectable time. So in order to get there, is by far from a one-day-fly.
I must admit, during writing of this I find it hard to come up with all 7 good ones. I mean, celebrating Marti grass or carnival in Rio is also on my list, but those are the typical one day flies which are not supposed to be on this list. They do however cost a sure amount of money. Hhmmmm.. maybe I should make a 7,5 list of things to do??!(but that's another blog post, someday) :-)
I think I'll stop now and think about these 7, because I am not totally satisfied with no. 7. I have also something like going through the jungle and building my office building according to my specs or going across the desert or walking to the north pole/south pole or becoming a surgeon.
This reminds me of Star Trek CCG where in the old rules you were not allowed to have more then 60 cards in your deck.... man that was hard too. Making explicit choices about which card should be in your deck, was ALWAYS a good thing, because it really puts you down to a stop and forces you to think even more harder then you already normally would. Maybe I'll expand the list to 10, but then I loose my association to the 7 wonders of the world :D. (which is also on my list... aackkk, need to prioritize and distinguish!!!)
Well,... till another time where I will try to explain what needs to be done to achieve each one of my set goals.
Cheers,
